| Mon 8 Feb 2010 | Booklinks (QLD) finds a new home at the State Library of Queensland Book Links is moving!
On 8th September at the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards, Premier Anna Bligh announced some great news for a number of writing and reading organizations in Queensland. In early 2010, the Queensland Writers Centre will re-locate to the State Library of Queensland at South Brisbane. Allied organizations including the Queensland Poetry Festival, Book Links (Qld), the Children's Book Council of Australia (Qld), and the recently launched Institute for the Future of the Book (known as if:book Australia) will share the location. The writing collective is the first project of a new initiative launched by the Premier and Minister of the Arts called A State of Writing, connecting writers, readers, and ideas throughout Queensland. Queensland State Librarian, Lea Giles-Peters, said she welcomes these groups to the State Library as part of the redevelopment of Level 2, and anticipates innovative new ways it will expand the Library’s existing public programming. Level 2 of the State Library will consolidate writing-related activities in Queensland into one vibrant hub that benefits and engages the community through writing, similar to those found in Canada and the United Kingdom. Queensland’s writing and reading sector will be enhanced by developing new connections, strategic collaborations and opportunities for Queensland writers and readers. Our soon-to-be new residence at the South Bank cultural precinct will be a wonderful home, provide us with a higher profile, a more visible presence, and with the QWC support the Queensland writing sector better by working with our partners on events, workshops, residencies, and festivals. The award-winning State Library is a natural setting for book lovers and book creators alike. The relocation is due to take place in the New Year with the aim of being open for business in early February 2010. |
| Sat 6 Jun 2009 | Queensland Day 2009 at Government House
This year, Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland and patron of Book Links, invited us to be part of the Q150 Queensland Day celebrations at Government House along with a number of other organizations of which Ms Wensley is patron. We were delighted to share an area with like-minded groups which promoted activities for children. Our display consisted of a ‘mock-up’ Narelle Oliver Travelling Suitcase, promotional material, laptops showing Undercover Stories and Seven Stories DVD’s. |

We also distinguished ourselves by wearing special t-shirts printed with the Book Links logo. Michael Bauer and Narelle Oliver joined us for a few hours and visitors were thrilled to be able to speak with them. Ms Wensley welcomed all groups, visited every display and encouraged us in our endeavours. Although the day was long, the time passed very quickly. We met and chatted at length to some very interesting and interested people and I feel sure that many of them will be keeping track of Book Links in the future. |
